My mission
"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." That time-tested idea sits at the center of everything I do.
As a physician and board-certified nephrologist, I have seen what kidney disease takes from people when it progresses unchecked, and how much life changes when dialysis enters the picture. I started this practice with a different goal: protecting your native kidney function while you have it, and treating dialysis as a last resort.
Traditional nephrology does important work, but insurance-driven care leaves little room for the things kidneys need most: time, prevention, and creativity. This practice exists to fill that gap. Because I work directly for you, I keep my patient panel small, our visits unhurried, and my thinking open. Together we will pursue every promising option for your kidneys, not just the ones a billing code allows.
If you are looking for a true partner in protecting your health, vitality, and independence for the long run, you are in the right place.
My story
What makes a great doctor? Credentials matter, but I would argue that connection is what separates good doctors from great ones. The physicians who get the best outcomes are the ones who know their patients as people. So before we ever talk about lab values, I want to know your story: what fills your days, who counts on you, and what makes life worth it for you.
In that spirit, here is some of mine.
My training took me across the Southeast, through Birmingham-Southern College, the University of Alabama, UAB School of Medicine, and the University of Mississippi Medical Center, culminating in my nephrology fellowship at Wake Forest University. But the experiences that shaped me as a physician did not all happen in a lecture hall.
Scouting shaped my worldview early. I am an Eagle Scout and a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow, and years spent on camp staff and at national events taught me how to listen and connect with people from every walk of life. Many of the mentors I met along the way, from engineers to business owners to physicians, encouraged the path that brought me here. At Birmingham-Southern, a liberal arts education stretched me beyond the sciences. I minored in pipe organ, and the Organist Guild helped connect me with some of my closest friends. Medical school and residency taught me medicine, but they also forged lifelong friendships, including with a former co-resident who is now my partner in founding Kidney Vitalium Partners.
Giving back has always been part of the picture. I have served as a Rotarian and formerly as a board member of Five Horizons, a Ryan White housing agency. Away from work, you will find me at the symphony and organ recitals, at Bryant-Denny Stadium on fall Saturdays, and traveling the world with my partner, Wylie.
If you want a physician who will work to help you keep your own kidneys, and a doctor you can actually talk to, I would love to hear from you. Send us your contact information and let’s explore a partnership together.
